Stress can give you a headache, make you feel tired, and just wear you down. But did you know that stress also has a negative effect on the health of your mouth? A few of the dental health problems stress can cause include:

  • Gum Disease: Also known as periodontal disease, this is caused when plaque infects gum tissue. However, a stress hormone called cortisol can aid the development of gum disease by weakening the immune system and destroying tissue.
  • Teeth Grinding And Clenching: This often occurs when you sleep, and stress is the primary cause. Teeth grinding can cause headaches, jaw pain (such as TMJ disorder), and damage to teeth.
  • Oral Tissue Problems: Stress can trigger problems that affect the tongue, gums, and other oral tissues. Some of these problems include lichen planus, cold sores, burning mouth syndrome, and canker sores.
  • Poor Oral Habits: Because of the stress in your life, you may take on habits that not only harm your body, but your dental health as well. These habits can include smoking, alcohol consumption, keeping a poor diet, and neglecting oral hygiene.

Stress can harm you mouth in so many ways, which is why it is important to brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up. You can also try reducing stress and anxiety by:

  • Exercising
  • Keeping a healthy diet
  • Meditating
  • Receiving counseling
